Security alert: Does your business have old logins for ex-staff?

Security alert: Does your business have old logins for ex-staff?

When an employee exits your company, you might be so caught up in daily activities that you neglect to remove their login credentials.

It's easy to miss. You'll handle it later, right?

However, unused login credentials can be a potential security threat, leaving your business vulnerable to cybercriminals. Additionally, it can be a waste of resources if you're paying for outdated subscriptions you no longer utilize.

Recent findings indicate that nearly half of businesses have accounts that are not actively managed.

If you've overlooked an account, you're not supervising it, which exposes your business to potential attacks.

These dangers are not just theoretical. Many cloud security incidents occur because unused login credentials and accounts have been compromised.

So, what steps should you take?

Allocate time to audit all accounts and login credentials utilized by your business. Ensure that you do not have open accounts for former employees (and confirm that their access has been entirely revoked, not merely left inactive).

This also applies to any software or service you have ceased using within your business. You might not be aware that you're still paying for a service you haven't used in months – or even years.

Moving forward, establish a clear procedure for when employees depart, and regularly assess the applications and services your business employs.
